Understanding diabetes

Diabetes is a long-term condition in which blood sugar stays too high, because the body does not make enough insulin or cannot use it properly. Type 1 usually starts in childhood; type 2 is more common and is linked to weight, diet and activity.

Get tested if you notice: passing urine often, being very thirsty, losing weight without trying, or feeling tired all the time.

Keeping track: checking your own blood sugar with a glucometer, as your doctor advises, helps you and our team keep it in a safe range with diet, activity and medicine.

What we offer

Diagnosis Blood tests in our own laboratory: fasting blood sugar (FBS), oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and HbA1c.
Blood sugar monitoring Regular checks and follow-up for people living with any type of diabetes.
Foot assessment & wound care Foot checks to catch problems early, and treatment of diabetic foot ulcers.
Patient education Practical advice for patients and families on living with diabetes and looking after their feet. For a meal plan, see our nutrition clinic.

Protecting your feet

Diabetes can damage nerves and blood flow in the feet, so a small cut can turn into an ulcer without you feeling it. Three daily habits help prevent this:

CheckLook at both feet every day, including between the toes.
Keep cleanWash and dry your feet carefully, especially between the toes.
Wear good shoesUse closed, well-fitting footwear. Avoid walking barefoot.

How we treat foot ulcers: the Sollagen Protocol

Our wound-care team follows one approach for every patient, built on five parts:

  1. Debridement: removing dead tissue so the wound can heal
  2. Infection control
  3. Offloading: taking pressure off the wound
  4. Advanced dressings
  5. Follow-up until the wound has closed
